PODCAST #33: 27/10/08: A Tribute To Steve Waldon

From Graeme Dickenson:

"Back in 1993 when Stereo 974 was better known as 3WRB The Voice Of The West, I would occasionally do guest spots on a program called Go To Hell. During this period I met Steve Waldon who also did guest spots on Go To Hell. Steve had a vast knowledge of media, because of this and his quick wit we hit it off.

Steve was aware of Let It Be Beatles and as he was a huge Beatles fan himself, decided he would like to do an article in The Age where four Beatle fans would create the album that would have followed Abbey Road using tracks from the first solo albums of all four Beatles. I told him what a fantastic idea that was and that we had done it on the show the previous year. He took this in good spirits and invited me to take part.

The article, titled "A Doll's House", was a double page feature in the EG section of The Age on Friday June 18 1993. The article led to virtually hundreds of Victorian Beatle fans becoming aware of our program. Some of those who became aware of us through that article now sit regularly on the panel.

Steve appeared on LIBB with similar concepts such as Beatles vs. Beach Boys and "The Green Album" and would often do talkback when he felt he had something to add to whatever we were talking about. Steve also arranged a generous half-page of the Green Guide on September 19 2002 to celebrate LIBB's 10 year anniversary.

When I spoke to him last he was keen to make another appearance on the show. Steve died in a scooter accident on October 26 and will be sadly missed by all at LIBB and our long time listeners who may have never known we existed without his help. Our hearts are with you my friend."

ON THIS DAY

About bloody time Lane! The first of a steady stream of "catching-up" podcasts over the next week. Bold italic type above are songs and anything else is discussion. Question: who is the chap photographed above? Clue: it answers an unsolved query from Graeme in this weeks show. Prize to be decided. But it'll probably be a can of VB.

EDIT: Alfred Daniel won. He checked the file name of the photo. Cheeky bastard! Yes, it was Mike Leander, who arranged the strings for She's Leaving Home when George Martin was not available. Alf I owe you a beer...
